Meals: None Day Two 7:00am Enjoy a continental breakfast at the hotel this morning. 8:00am Depart with guide. 9:00am Take a VIP tour of The White House (TBA). “The President’s Palace,” as it was called in the beginning, has been the official home of every U.S. President except George Washington. Groups must acquire a White House appointment by writing to their Congressman or Senator so a previously arranged White House tour time may be scheduled. Scheduled tours may be cancelled without notice. 10:00am Depart 10:30am Take a VIP Tour of The United States Capitol. (Groups must acquire a VIP appointment on their own of The U.S. Capitol by writing to their Congressman or Senator so a previously arranged Capitol tour time may be scheduled if they wish to tour inside the Capitol. Please advise Premier Travel of tour date and time.) The most recognized symbol of democratic government in the world, the U.S. Capitol has housed Congress since 1800 and is one of the most imposing public buildings in the world. The Capitol is where Congress meets to write the laws of our nation, and where presidents are inaugurated. Its ceilings are decorated with historic images, and its halls are lined with statuary and paintings representing great events and people in the nation’s history. If a tour inside the building is not available our guide will conduct a narrated tour outside the building. · Tour The Library of Congress. The Library of Congress is the largest national library in the world with more than 100 million items in three buildings. The original Library of Congress Building (now called the Thomas Jefferson Building) is perhaps Washington’s most richly ornamented building. · Tour The Supreme Court Building (pending time and length of lines). Within the walls of this white marble monument the third branch of government exercises its mandate to protect and interpret the spirit of the Constitution. If for any reason an inside tour is not available or the wait in line is extremely long our guide will conduct a tour outside the building. 12:00pm Depart 12:30pm Enjoy lunch via vouchers at the Old Post Office Pavilion, a splendid example of Romanesque architecture, crowned by a 315-foot clock tower. This former headquarters of the Postal Service, now restored, houses federal offices, restaurants, shops and boutiques, and an elegant courtyard. Ride the glass elevator through the nine-story atrium to a spectacular view of the city’s skyline and to the tower’s bell chamber! 1:30pm Depart. 2:00pm Visit the National Archives. The spacious rotunda of the National Archives contains the original Declaration of Independence, Constitution, and the Bill of Rights. For the first time in modern history, all the pages of these documents are on display to the public. All the displays have been made accessible for viewing by individuals in wheel chairs and children. At night, the display is lowered 20 feet into a bomb- and fireproof vault. 3:30pm Depart 4:00pm Stop at The National World War II Memorial. This newest memorial honors the 16 million who served in the armed forces of the U.S. during World War II, the more than 400,000 who died, and the millions who supported the war effort from home. Symbolic of the defining event of the 20th Century, the memorial is a monument to the spirit, sacrifice, and commitment of the American people to the common defense of the nation and to the broader causes of peace and freedom from tyranny throughout the world. · Stop at The Vietnam Veterans Memorial. This privately funded memorial has drawn millions who have come to touch the over 50,000 names, make pencil rubbings and leave flowers, letters, flags and personal mementos. · Stop at The Lincoln Memorial, overlooking the Reflecting Pool, was patterned on a classic Greek temple. Inside, inscriptions from his Gettysburg Address and Second Inaugural Address flank the 19-foot marble statue of our 16th President. · Stop at The Korean War Veterans Memorial. The triangular field contains nineteen ground troopers, clad in foul weather ponchos, fully equipped for battle. Representing those who supported the ground troops are hundreds of faces etched on a polished granite wall. 6:00pm Depart 6:30pm Enjoy your dinner at the Hard Rock Café. Meal choices made upon arrival. Choice of the following sandwich options—Country Charbroiled Burger, a recipe from the Old South; Cheeseburger; Gardenburger, meatless patty made from fresh mushrooms, onions, grains, low-fat cheese, seasonings and spices; Grilled Chicken Sandwich, or BBQ Pork Sandwich. You may also opt for the Caesar Salad. All platters served with French Fries, Lettuce and Pickle. Hard Rock Café Chocolate Chip Cookies for Dessert, and choice of coffee, tea or soda. Choose Upon Arrival. DO NOT BE LATE! Seats will not be held more than 15 minutes beyond your scheduled arrival time. Groups are to enter through the E Street entrance. 7:30pm Depart on an illuminated tour of the following: · Stop at The Marine Corps War Memorial (. One of the largest bronze statues ever depicts the American Flag being raised on Mount Suribachi during World War II and commemorates all marines who have died in battle since 1775. The view from this hillside looking across the Potomac into Washington is spectacular. · Walk through The Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts. Two months after President Kennedy's assassination in November 1963, Congress designated the National Cultural Center as a "living memorial" to Kennedy, and authorized $23 million to help build what was now known as the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts. · Stop at The Franklin D. Roosevelt Memorial. The FDR is unique among the memorials of Washington, DC. The memorial is divided into four outdoor galleries, or rooms, one for each of FDR’s terms in office. · Stop at The Jefferson Memorial. The 19-foot statue of the third president stands beneath a rotunda inscribed with passages from the Declaration of Independence and Jefferson’s other famous writings. Looking from the memorial across the Tidal Basin provides an unforgettable view of the city. 9:30pm Depart. Return to the hotel for the night. Here in the “nation’s money factory,” paper currency, postage stamps and many of the official documents issued by the U.S. government are produced. DISCLAIMER - All school group requests must be made on a fully completed school group reservation request form, which must be mailed or faxed at least four weeks prior to your visit. Requests will be handled on a first come/first serve basis. Once your tour is scheduled, you will receive a fax including your tour date, time and confirmation number. You must bring your school group reservation request form with your confirmation number on it with you and present it to the nearest tour guide stationed on the sidewalk at your bus drop off point. Allow 45 minutes from the time you enter the building to the end of the tour. 10:30am Depart 11:00pm Visit Ford’s Theatre and Petersen House (pending length of line). Restored, as it was the night John Wilkes Booth shot President Abraham Lincoln, Ford’s is still an active theater. Visit the lower-level museum exhibiting Lincoln Memorabilia, Booth’s diary and one of his boots. Cross 10th Street to the Petersen House to see where Lincoln died. DISCLAIMER: Ford’s Theatre may close at any time for performance rehearsals. 12:00pm Depart 12:30pm Visit Pentagon City Shopping Mall and have lunch via vouchers. The skylit Food Court features international specialties from the familiar to the exotic. A scenic glass elevator ride to the Third Level reveals more than 170 fascinating stores and restaurants. 2:00pm Depart 2:30pm Arrive at Arlington National Cemetery. This is the final resting place for President John F. Kennedy, Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis, Audie Murphy, prizefighter Joe Louis, and thousands of soldiers from every major U.S. war. Arlington House home of Civil War General Robert E. Lee, Space Shuttle Challenger Astronaut’s Memorial and the Tomb of the Unknowns are also located on these famous 612 acres. Here, he escaped the rigors of public office and enjoyed the life of a successful Virginia planter. America’s most visited historic house, Mount Vernon sits on a grassy, shaded slope overlooking the Potomac River. Many of the furnishings are original pieces acquired by Washington himself. Mount Vernon is both George Washington’s home and final resting-place. This Southern plantation standing on the banks of the Potomac River details the life of the “Father of Our Country” while providing fascinating insights into Colonial times. 11:00am Depart 12:00am Visit your choice of the Smithsonian Institution’s museums on the National Mall. Enjoy lunch via vouchers today in any of the museums cafeterias* while visiting (the world’s largest McDonalds is located in the National Air & Space Museum). IMPORTANT NOTICE TO TEACHERS/CHAPERONES OF YOUTH GROUPS: An adult to youth chaperone ratio is being enforced. The museums policy requires that an adult accompany all youth groups at all times. One adult for every 5 students grades preK through 2. One adult for every 10 students grades 3 through 7. One adult for every 15 students grades 8 through 12. Teachers and chaperons must remain with their groups at all times. The museums cafeterias have no provisions for groups who bring bag lunches. This somber and moving museum tells the story of the Holocaust through artifacts, films, photographs and oral histories. The museum’s primary mission is to inform Americans about the Holocaust, to remember those who suffered, and to inspire visitors to contemplate the moral implications of their choices and responsibilities as citizens in an interdependent world.
